Studying in Arnhem: HAN, ArtEZ, and Van Hall Larenstein

Three very different institutions share this city. Here is what is common to all of them, and where to actually get help.

Three institutions, three different worlds

HAN (HAN University of Applied Sciences) is a large, broad applied-sciences university with programmes across business, health, technology and more, spread across several campuses. ArtEZ is a dedicated arts academy — fine art, design, music, performance. Van Hall Larenstein focuses on applied sciences around land, water, environment, and animal management. They feel like different worlds day to day, but the settling-in logistics below apply to all three.

Applying and enrolling

EU/EEA applicants typically apply through Studielink, the national application portal used by nearly all Dutch higher-education institutions — it is where you actually submit your enrolment, even if you also talk directly with the institution. Non-EU applicants usually work directly with the institution’s international office, since enrolment and visa/residence permit arrangements are handled together (the institution typically acts as your sponsor for the residence permit application).

Tuition fees

EU/EEA students generally pay a statutory tuition fee set nationally each year. Non-EU students pay an institutional fee set independently by each university, usually significantly higher than the statutory rate. Fees are revised annually — check the current numbers on your specific institution’s own site rather than a fixed figure here.

After graduation: the orientation year

Non-EU graduates of a Dutch degree may be eligible for a zoekjaar (orientation year) residence permit, giving extra time to find qualifying work after finishing. Rules and timing matter here — start researching this with the IND well before your final semester, not after graduating.
